President Trump cancelled his February 1st tariff hike on European countries opposing a U.S. buyout of Greenland.

The president announced the framework for a deal concerning Greenland and the entire Arctic Region was reached during a productive meeting between Trump and Secretary General of NATO Mark Rutte. President Trump said he will not impose the tariff because the framework’s solution to the Greenland issue would be a “great one for the United States of America.” Top members of the Trump Administration will lead continuing negotiations.

Trump's Truth Social Greenland Announcement

Here’s President Trump’s announcement from Truth Social:

Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region. This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Using tariff threats to leverage negotiations is a common tactic for President Trump and his administration. To get a deal rolling on Greenland is only the latest example as he’s used tariffs to leverage cooperation on border control from Mexico and Canada, to negotiate trade deals, and pressure for peace deals.

Showing willingness to implement tariff hikes, adjust them, or cancel them has helped make tariffs an effective tool for the president and his administration. Of course, that leaves shippers having to keep an eye on volatile tariff amounts and news.

Just because there’s a deal in the works that President Trump is happy with doesn’t mean that the United States will suddenly own Greenland. President Trump gave an interview to CNBC’s Joe Kernen, in which the reporter asked if it’s a deal of ownership. President Trump said, “It’s a little complex, but we’ll explain it down the line.”

President Trump: Greenland deal will last 'forever'

NATO representative Allison Hart gave a touch more insight into the deal to the Epoch Times, as outlined in an article by Ryan Morgan:

In response to a request for comment, NATO spokesperson Allison Hart told The Epoch Times that the discussion between Rutte and Trump had been productive.

“Discussions among NATO Allies on the framework the President referenced will focus on ensuring Arctic security through the collective efforts of Allies, especially the seven Arctic Allies,” Hart said.

“Negotiations between Denmark, Greenland, and the United States will go forward aimed at ensuring that Russia and China never gain a foothold—economically or militarily—in Greenland.”
